Burkhard Hess nominated as foreign correspondent of the Academy of Sciences of Bologna Institute

24 November 2017

The Accademia delle Scienze dell’Istituto di Bologna (Academy of Sciences of Bologna Institute) has elected Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Burkhard Hess, Director of the MPI Luxembourg, as foreign correspondent. The prestigious Academy, founded in 1690, officially welcomed him into its ranks during a ceremony held in Bologna on 24 November.

During the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Federico Carpi, professor emeritus of civil procedural law of the University of Bologna, presented Prof. Burkhard Hess with the medal of the Academy. In his address to his fellow academicians and numerous guests, Prof. Burkhard Hess expressed his deep gratitude for this award and emphasized the role that the scholars of civil procedural law of the University of Bologna have played in fostering international exchange in their field from the beginning. The International Association of Procedural Law was actually founded in Bologna in 1955.

At the invitation of the Academy, Prof. Burkhard Hess then delivered a lecture on “Public Hearings in Court Proceedings”. He illustrated how the right to a public hearing, guaranteed both by Article 47 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, was implemented differently in national and international justice systems, referring to the examples of Germany, Italy, the courts of the State of New York and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Broadening the perspective on the concept of publicity, Prof. Burkhard Hess raised the question whether social acceptance, visibility and accessibility to the justice system might be improved by a more and better use of websites, press releases and social media.
