Research Fellow Javier Garcia Olmedo awarded with Doctoral degree from the University of Luxembourg
We are thrilled to announce that Javier Garcia Olmedo, Research Fellow of the International Max Planck Research School for Successful Dispute Resolution (IMPRS-SDR), has been awarded the Doctoral degree by the University of Luxembourg.
On 3 July 2020, Javier Garcia Olmedo successfully defended his doctoral dissertation titled “The (mis)use of nationality in international investment law: an analysis of remedies against nationality planning”. The Jury gathered Prof. Dr Herwig Hofmann (President, University of Luxembourg), Prof. Dr Hélène Ruiz Fabri (Vice-President, Max Planck Institute Luxembourg of International Procedural Law), Prof. Dr Matthew Happold (Supervisor, University of Luxembourg), Dr Martins Paparinskis (University College London), and Ass. Prof. Dr Catharine Titi (University Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas).
Javier’s PhD project examines the most common and recent methods of nationality planning and the position adopted by investment tribunals towards these practices. After analysing thoroughly the downsides of the nationality planning strategies developed by economic actors, Javier Garcia Olmedo suggests innovative treaty drafting approaches with an objective to make states less vulnerable to nationality planning practices.
