Niels Elsner is a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law in the Department of European and Comparative Procedural Law. He is a PhD candidate at Heidelberg University under the supervision of Professor Burkhard Hess. His doctoral research focuses on the comparative procedural law. 

Prior to joining the Max Planck Institute, Niels has obtained his First State Exam at Heidelberg University in 2019 and his Second State Exam at the Higher Regional Court of Hamburg in 2021 – both with distinction. At Heidelberg University, he was a student research assistant of Prof. Thomas Pfeiffer and a coach for the Willem C. Vis Moot. 

He teaches a tutorial in private international and international civil procedure law at Trier University. 

His main research interests include international and European procedural law and private international law.
