Guest Programme

With a focus on comparative, transnational and international legal research, the Institute is a place of lively exchanges between academia and practice. Its inspiring intellectual atmosphere is why scholars from all over the world come to Luxembourg to research and discuss current questions in procedural law. Indeed, as the home to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), Luxembourg is the judicial capital of the European Union and therefore the perfect location for a Max Planck Institute on legal research.

Located in close proximity to the European courts, researchers and guests can easily attend hearings of important cases and use the excellent law library of the CJEU. Luxembourg is also in close proximity to the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg), the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, both located in The Hague, and to major arbitration hubs, including Paris and The Hague.

The Institute’s Guest Programme is open to scholars and practitioners from Europe and overseas and provides the opportunity to come to Luxembourg for short- or medium-term research stays.

Our research guests enjoy a fruitful exchange of ideas with other international colleagues as well as the Research Fellows of the Institute. The weekly department meetings and various discussion groups are excellent opportunities for this exchange.

As a guest, you will benefit from the Institute’s center-piece – its extensive library. In addition to a personal workspace, you will receive professional support from the librarians with regard to the use of the library and its services. Many guests underlined that access to such an extensive library specialised in procedural matters had a major impact on their research.

The International Officer will be your contact person throughout the application procedure and your research stay.

Prerequisite for a research stay at the MPI Luxembourg is the submission of an application, including a CV, an outline of your research project, two recommendation letters (applications from professors are exempt from this requirement) and a list of publications.
