Launch Conference of the Department of International Law and Dispute Resolution

More than 160 people attended the conference “International Law and Litigation” organized by the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg on October 16th.

Welcomed by his Excellency, M. Guy Yelda, Ambassador of France to Luxembourg and the two MPI directors, eminent judges and leading scholars have discussed three crucial topics for the study of international litigation:

1) the importance of procedure in international litigation, with Judge Bruno Simma (Chair), Dr. Yas Banifatemi, Prof. Gabrielle Marceau, Judge Allan Rosas, Prof. Hervé Ascensio and Judge Ineta Ziemele;

2) the foreground and background of an international judicial decision, with Prof. Andrea Gattini (Chair), Prof; Laurence Boisson de Chazournes, Judge Jean-Claude Bonichot, Prof. Robert Howse, Judge Fausto Pocar and Prof. Rüdiger Wolfrum;

3) the dialectic between internal and external perspectives of international litigation, with Lorenzo Gradoni (Chair), Prof. Yves Daudet, Prof. Andrea Hamann, Prof. Matthew Happold, Prof. Christof Schreuer and Sir Michael Wood.

This event was the opportunity to celebrate the appointment of Professor Hélène Ruiz Fabri as Director of the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg and the launch of her Department of International Law and Dispute Resolution.

Previously Dean of the Sorbonne Law School and recently awarded the CNRS Silver Medal for her researches, Hélène Ruiz Fabri now focuses her scientific activities on the international procedural law, a field still largely under-explored. Since her appointment in September 2014, she brought together in her department more than twenty researchers from different disciplines of international law and of different geographical and cultural backgrounds.

This new research department aims to establish a forum for scholars and professionals for the study and discussion on the procedures of international courts and tribunals and the dispute settlement mechanisms available in all branches of international law.
