Max Planck Lecture Series: Prof. Peter Schlosser gave a lecture on “The Departure of the European Law of Civil Procedure”

16 November 2015

On 11 November 2015 Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter Schlosser, Professor Emeritus at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich and author of the renowned Schlosser Report, came to the MPI Luxembourg to give a lecture on “The departure of the European law of civil procedure”. He presented an insightful reflection on the milestones in the development of the Brussels Regime from its foundation until today. He provided the audience with his valuable perspective as one of the prominent participants in this process.

Further contributions to the topic were presented by Prof. Dr. Marko Ilešič (Président de Chambre, CJEU) and Prof. Dr. Jörg Pirrung  (Former Judge at the Court of First Instance of the European Communities). Judge Ilešič provided examples from his practice at the Court of Justice at the European Union while Prof. Pirrung shared personal observations from the negotiations on the accession of the United Kingdom to the Brussels Convention.

The presentations were followed by a lively discussion focusing on the current methods of interpretation of the Regulation by the CJEU and the Member State courts and, in particular, of the remaining role of the comparative procedural law approach in this process.

The event ended with the launch of the Commentary EU-Zivilprozessrecht: EuZPR authored by Prof. Hess and Prof. Schlosser which was presented by Prof. Christian Kohler (Europa-Institut, Saarland University).
