With this distinction, the International Hellenic University of Thessaloniki honors Professor Hess' scientific research in the field of European procedural law, which has become a major field of judicial activity as cross-border litigation within the Internal Market steadily grows and expands. Burkhard Hess has written more than 100 articles and books, mostly on comparative and European procedural law; moreover, in 2010, he published a treatise on "Europäisches Zivilprozessrecht", the 2nd edition of which will be published in 2017. Last year, together with Professor Peter Schlosser, he wrote a Commentary on the most important European instruments in the field.

This distinction also honors the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg, a new and inspiring research institution for procedural law. The Institute attracts researchers from all over the world to Luxembourg which has become a major location for dispute resolution in Europe. A close scientific relationship exists between the International Hellenic University of Thessaloniki and the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg, with both institutions advancing foundational research in comparative and European procedural law.
