Professor Erik Franckx

Erik Franckx is full-time professor, President of Center for International Law, Faculty of Law and Criminology, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (V.U.B.), where he obtained a research professorship between 2010 and 2020. He serves at present as the President of the Belgian Society of International Law (2017 - ) and was appointed Honorary Professor at the Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth, South Africa (2020 - ).

He holds moreover teaching assignments at the Université Libre de Bruxelles; the Sorbonne Université Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and the University of Akureyri, Iceland.

He is at present appointed by Belgium as: Expert in marine scientific research for use in special arbitration under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (2004 – ); expert in maritime boundary delimitation to the International Hydrographic Organization (2005 - ); and arbitrator under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (2014 - ).

He has taught about 40 short courses in English and French in the following countries: China, Estonia, Greece, Iceland, Japan, Philippines, Russian Federation, Sweden, Turkey, Union of the Comoros, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, and Vietnam.

He was an invited speaker at about 250 international conferences in the following countries: Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Italy, India, Japan, Latvia, Lebanon, Macedonia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tanzania, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, and Vietnam.

He served as a consultant to governments (foreign as well as the three levels of the Belgian state structure, i.e. the federal, regional and community level), international, supranational and non-governmental organizations. He was the only foreign legal counsel on behalf of the Netherlands in the Arctic Sunrise Arbitration against the Russian Federation (2013 - 2017).

He has published widely, with a special interest in the law of the sea (for a complete list, see As a former student of Prof. Louis B.
