Pedro Cruz Villalón is Professor Emeritus at the Autonomous University of Madrid, where he has been holding a chair of Constitutional Law since 2003. Until his appointment as Judge (1992) and later President (1998) of the Spanish Constitutional Court he held a chair of Constitutional Law at the University of Seville. During the period 2009-2015 he was advocate general at the European Court of Justice.
His research interests and publications are focused on Comparative Constitutional Law, Comparative Constitutional History, Constitutional Jurisdiction and European Union Law, with a current particular emphasis on the Charter of Fundamental Rights. As the holder of a Humboldt research prize he is a guest researcher at the Max Planck Institute Heidelberg.
His research project at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg concerns the role of the advocate general in supranational adjudicative bodies.
