Professor Volker Lipp

Volker Lipp (* 1962) holds the Chair of Civil Law, Civil Procedure, Medical Law and Comparative Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Göttingen, Germany.

He studied law in Mannheim, Heidelberg and Göttingen, became Dr. iur. in 1994 and Dr. iur. habil. in 1999. In 2000 he became full professor at the University of Göttingen. In 2011 he declined to join the University of Regensburg.

Volker Lipp has been Visiting Professor at the University of Bergen, Norway, and at Chuo-University, Tokyo, Japan. He served as President of the German Section of the International Commission on Civil Status from 2007 until 2015. He has been a member of the Central Ethics Commission at the German Medical Association since 2010, and of the German Ethics Council since 2016. He became Doctor et Professor honoris causa of Eötvös Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary, in 2016.

His research focuses on general principles of private law and civil procedure, the law of persons and family law, and medical law, with a special focus on international and European civil procedure and private international law.

At MPI Luxembourg he would like to further explore the judicial architecture of the European Union, namely the interplay between national courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union.
