Gustavo Becker is a Research Fellow in the Department of International Law and Dispute Resolution and a member of the International Max Planck Research School for Successful Dispute Resolution in International Law. He pursues a Joint Doctorate from the University of Luxembourg and the University of Amsterdam (cotutelle) under the supervision of Prof. Hélène Ruiz Fabri and Prof. Ingo Venzke. His research focuses on the use of private dispute resolution in cases involving transnational business-related human rights abuses and the correlated impacts in the realization of the right to access to remedy for victims.
Before joining the Institute, Gustavo worked for the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the UNCITRAL Secretariat, the Center for Arbitration and Mediation of the Chamber of Commerce Brazil-Canada, and Skadden Arps LLP. He also worked as a research and teaching assistant at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Brazil, where he graduated with a master’s degree (M.Sc). in International Law and Sustainability and a bachelor in law (LL.B)., both cum laude.
In addition, he holds an LL.M. in Globalisation and Law with specialization in Human Rights (honours) from Maastricht University as a UM Holland-High Potential Scholarship winner and was awarded a full scholarship by The Hague Academy of International Law in 2019.
